Comments Off on Dog Flu Symptoms And Treatment

This a short information about dog flu symptoms and treatment.

Canine Influenza, otherwise called canine flu, was initially seen in the USA in 2004 in racing greyhounds in Florida. The CIV H3N8 strain has now spread to over 38 countries and generally happens in the canine population. Genetic analysis indicates that the virus is closely associated with equine flu, also as greyhounds and race horses frequently are around the very same racetracks, speculation is that canine flu evolved in the equine virus and jumped from horses to dogs.

In 2015, an epidemic of a new breed of dog flu appeared. This breed known as CIV H3N2 is of avian origin rather than linked to this earlier CIV H3N8 virus.

Dogs of any age may be affected, and since the viruses are comparatively new, there’s little to no natural immunity from the canine population. Virtually all dogs who are exposed to the virus become infected and almost 80% show clinical signs of disease. The virus is extremely contagious, but mercifully has a very low mortality rate. There’s no “season” for this, and it spreads year round. Dogs greatest in danger are those bundled together, the very young, the very old and also the immune-compromised. The disease doesn’t affect humans.

The virus spreads through respiratory secretions (e.g. Mucous and saliva) and infected objects and surfaces (e.g. Noodle surfaces, water, food bowls, collars and leashes). Folks also distribute it going between infected and uninfected dogs with no appropriate hygiene or precautions.

Indicators of canine flu follow along one of two paths, severe or mild, with the gentle kind being the most frequent. Symptoms are usually found within 2-3 days of disease. The gentle form contains: Soft, moist cough which lasted for 10-30 times, Dry cough, such as kennel cough, Loss of desire, Lethargy, Sneezing, Discharge from eyes, Runny nose, and Thick discharge from nose.

Treatment will be based on the symptoms that your dog is introduced. Antibiotics may be prescribed to combat any bacterial infections existing. Anti-inflammatories might be awarded for fever, swelling and pain. Fluid treatment is given to all those dogs that are very dehydrated. Other medicines may be prescribed based on the additional symptoms present. Hospitalization may be required in more severe cases. Fatalities have just been reported with the beginning of pneumonia, however, the speed is less than 10 percent of dogs that are affected.

Boosting the Dog Immune System

Boosting your pet’s immune system helps accelerate the recovery from dog flu, in addition to preventing further afield. It is the work of the immune system to secure your pet’s own body from cells infected by bacteria, a virus, fungus, or parasites. The immune system also filters out toxins and retains cells powerful enough to fight dog illness like the dog influenza. When the immune system is weak, micro-organisms comprising infections and toxins can pass via the immune cells that are immune.

The most effective methods to enhance the immune system include fundamental nutrition and nutritional supplements. A puppy who eats entire foods free of substances and additives and allergens like wheat, soy, and corn may have higher health than a puppy that has a bad diet. Your pet’s diet ought to be rich in organic ingredients which mimic what he’d consume in the wild and also the food needs to have a high moisture content.

1 approach to help your pet remain free of the flu would be to vaccinate him against it. Vaccines have now released vaccines against the two canine flu viruses. Flu vaccines aren’t a guarantee that your pet will not catch the illness, but when a vaccinated pet doesn’t go down with influenza, it’s typically not as severe as it is in puppies which are unvaccinated.

Could puppies catch flu from people?

Diseases that leap from animals to humans are known as zoonoses. However, there’s also the possibility of diseases like influenza, to maneuver out of people to animals. These are known as reverse zoonoses.

In today’s busy and self-centered world when no one has any time for anyone else, pets in our homes make for the best friends and companions we can ever hope to have! The joy and enthusiasm that my pet dog greets me with when I reach home at the end of a long and arduous workday immediately lifts my spirits and any tiredness I bring back with me vanishes into thin air. Pets are loyal, faithful, unconditional and spontaneous in their love and benefit us in several ways.

In return, it is important for us to ensure we care for our pets too in the best way possible.

Here are some key ways in which you can make sure you are being a responsible pet owner and carer!

Space: Pets need to have a place that is safe, dry, clean and cozy. While deliberating on the choice of our pets we must carefully consider the space it will require for the aquarium for our fish, corner for our cat or dog or cage for the lovebirds we so wish to have! If an entire room is too much to think of, a clear and demarcated boundary can be created for your furry friend.

Diet: According to the pet that you own, you must strive to ensure they are fed a balanced and nutritious diet. Every species and breed in turn has foods that are permissible and those that can cause greater harm than good. Make sure you check with the vet and only feed your pet the right kind of foods and appropriate portions. Just as food needs to be carefully monitored, so too you must ensure that your pet has adequate and clean drinking water available.

Exercise: All pets need their space to be able to flex their muscles and spread their wings. Pets like dogs need to be taken for a scheduled walk regularly. Pet birds must have enough room in their cages not to feel cramped. A daily exercise routine will ensure your pets are healthy and happy

Medical Attention: Regular checkups with the veterinarian will make sure that your pet is hale and healthy and will help to diagnose any ailments well in advance. Vaccinations must be given in a timely and disciplined manner.

Cleanliness: All pets have cleanliness and hygiene needs. Pets like dogs and cats must be bathed regularly and groomed to keep their fur, hair, nails and skin well cared for. The area your pets are housed in must be cleaned and washed daily to keep the surroundings clean and pest free. Make sure also to keep your pet free of parasites like fleas, ticks and worms. Fish bowls or aquarium water needs to be changed appropriately in a timely fashion.

Supervision: While most pets once trained and habitual to their environment tend to stay safe it is important for a new pet to be supervised till they get a lay of the land! Inadvertently leaving the cage open could let the parrot or parakeet escape, dashing out of an ajar door could let the puppy or kitten to make a wild dash out onto the street which could be potentially dangerous.

Comments Off on How to Remove Pet Hairs

Pets drop their hairs constantly and they shed out everywhere in the house. These small hairs can be very annoying when they go deep into clothing, couches, carpet and furniture. It is not just unpleasant in appearance, pet hairs are actually one of the sources of various kind of respiratory allergies. They have awful impact to the respiratory system especially for young kids.

Here are some easy methods to remove the hairs of your pets on furniture and clothing.

Vacuum Cleaner

This is the most effective and handy technique. A suitable vacuum cleaner can cover and clean up a large piece of area. Using vacuum cleaner is in particular good for carpet, blinds and large couch. Many vacuum companies have come out with attachments to help suck up pet hairs from difficult areas such as carpet. You may use two special attachments to deal with larger flat surface e.g. carpet and then a sucking tube on gaps and hanging pieces such as curtain.

Rollers or Tape

This is probably the cheapest, simplest and yet effective method. It works exceptionally well for removing pet hairs from clothing where there is an uneven surface. Simply move the roller back and forth over the problem areas until all hairs have been picked up. Remember to peel off the piece when it is fully covered with hair. Then a fresh sticky piece will appear to work again.

Similar technique applies when you use packaging tape, duck tape or scotch tape. Wrap you hand with the non-sticky side toward your hand and the adhesive side face out. Brush your hand over the desired area and pick up the hairs thoroughly. However rollers and tape method may not work so well for larger piece of furniture like sofa and carpet. It can be a tiring job if you do so.

Lint Brush

Have you try to use a lint brush to remove the lint on your wool and woven jackets? They can be used in picking up pet hairs from your furniture as well. The key is to pull the brush in one single direction only. Do not move your brush back and forth. The reversal of direction will make the hair re-deposit onto the clothes again. Use lint brush on small furniture items such as chair and couches are good. However it is difficult to use between small gaps because of the flat surface of the lint brush. So you have to redo with a tape or vacuum cleaner to work deep inside small areas.

With all these methods to clean off pet hairs, the basic is that you can avoid the dropping of pet hairs. This depends on your training of the pets so they will not run around inside the house and shed hairs everywhere. Also regular hair combing helps to reduce the hairs from losing out.

Why Choose Holistic Pet Care?

Comments Off on Why Choose Holistic Pet Care?

It is in my opinion as other naturopaths that allopathic medicine is based on fear. Fear of disease, fear of death. Fear based medicine has the been the approach to get pet owners to conform to synthetic medicines; that weaken the immune system and weighs your pet down with toxins and pathogens.

Holistic pet care is an innate way of caring for your animals. Choosing an alternative lifestyle for your pets brings better overall health and vitality to your pet. Diet, nutrition and lifestyle adjustments are crucial to allowing your pet to live in health and harmony for many years to come.

Have you recently made any healthy lifestyle changes?

Maybe you’ve switched your diet, or have decided to take longer walks and enjoy the ocean breeze or the fresh mountain air.

Might these same practices keep your pet in better health, too?

A holistic pet care practitioner looks at a pet’s overall health, and uses traditional alternative therapies. We rely on lab tests and natural remedies for prevention and help to keep pets healthy and vibrant. We encourage changes in pets’ diets and lifestyles to help ward off illnesses like skin issues, obesity, arthritis, diabetes, and sometimes even cancer.

For example…

One of my clients, Toby, the big red dog! (Irish setter) Was riddled with oozing hot spots, hair loss and scratching uncontrollably. In addition, Toby was extremely overweight. After learning of Toby’s daily diet intake and lifestyle routine, I created a health promotion plan for Toby to follow which would not only assist in the demise of the hot spots but promote weight loss. Three weeks later, Toby’s oozing hot spots dried up, his hair had grown so long, a grooming appointment was the next stop and Toby was 7 pounds lighter. This change was only just in a few short weeks. Imagine the progress and vitality of Toby in years to come?

A permanent lifestyle adjustment needs to be implemented so your pet can forever thrive.

Here are some differences between conventional pet foods and holistic pet foods.

Conventional foods contain: over-processed, dried up dough that is cooked under extreme pressure and high temperatures. This process creates continuous chemical and physical alterations to the ingredient mixture.

Typical changes include:

Starch gelatinization
Inactivation of nutritionally active factors
Protein denaturation
Vitamin loss

Holistic food contains:

Raw meat! That means the flesh, the tissue, the muscle, the fat, the organs of an animal. Ideally, the diet should be fresh but as a viable alternative fresh, dehydrated, animal meat can serve as a compensation. Fruits and vegetables are not ideal for your carnivores to ingest.

Pet owners often wonder – what they should do to keep their pets healthy; is there a decorum they should follow? Pets are like family members that need to be fostered with care. It’s a very responsible task as a pet owner to keep the pet in check. There are various important things that need to be taken care of if you want to be a proud owner of a pet.

Periodical Veterinary Appointments

In a case of pets, the most significant reminder is – don’t wait for them to get sick, bring them for a periodical check up. If it’s not feasible for a half-yearly one, then at least once a year wellness checkup is a must for the pets.

Similar to human beings, pets need periodical check up to ensure the wellness and resolving the health issues if they are infected. Consequently, pets are needed to visit for regular vaccination and other screening tests to avoid sudden superfluous concerns.

Parasite Protection

The most common causes of disease in pets are Parasites. Some parasites can be internal, such as worms and protozoa and some are external like ticks and fleas. These parasites can be deadly and can cause diseases like Heartworm and Lyme which ultimately lead to the death of pets. Pets’ parasites can be contagious which can be a threat to the kids of the family. Providentially, these parasites can be easily preventable by providing monthly preventatives.

Spaying and Neutering

Spaying and Neutering pets are an imperative and beneficial for a number of reasons. To begin with, it would prevent the overpopulation of pets. Secondly, it lowers risks for various fatal diseases like pyometra – infection of the uterus, breast cancer, testicular cancer etc. Last but not the least, a lot of pets get lost or abandoned due to their behavioral problems and spaying and neutering can also help with these problems like aggression, get lost, roam etc.

Microchips

While collars and name tags are necessary, they can’t guarantee the safe return of pets. As a result, here comes the marvel – the Microchip. Since collars and name tags can fall off, microchips are the next best possible alternatives out there. A lot of pets that have ended in shelter houses were returned to the owners’ side for the reason that they had microchips attached to their body.

Nutritional Foods and Exercise

Don’t go and look for only cheap, inexpensive pet foods since those foods may not be healthy for the pets. You can consult to a veterinary about what, how and in which amount u should feed your pets. The foods should be nutritional and well balanced. Consequently, it comes to the issue – exercise.

A lot of pets, nowadays, suffer from obesity that leads to diseases like diabetes and arthritis. Therefore, pets are needed to maintain their level of activity and weight just like humans. Research shows that exercise is the best possible way to keep the pets healthy both physically and mentally.

Love and Affection

Pets also long for love and affection just like us humans. They like it when their owners pay attention to them or take extra care of them. Research verifies that pets rely on us not only for food and security but also for social comfort and bonding.

Comments Off on Tips to Avoid Pet Health Hazards in Fall

Fall is one of the favorite seasons for furry pals due to its crisp air, colorful foliage and sweet aroma of the seasonal plants lingering in the environment. Though the season is welcoming, it has potential health hazards for your furry pals, about which you may not be knowing. It is essential to learn about these dangers and protect your pet from the unconditional situations.

Let us look into some of the major things that you need to take care of in Fall.

Less Hours Of Daylight

Shorter days mean fewer hours of daylight and we have to cut-short some of our day activities when visibility is poor. Dog owners have to take their furry pal on walks either during the dusk or dawn. This brings in the added risks of accidents due to low visibility.

During winters, when taking your furry pals on walks in the darkness of early morning or evening, it is crucial to be careful of your pet. Reduced light means it is challenging for drivers to see animals, which may lead to accidents at times. Therefore, it is crucial to keep a close observation on your pooch on a walk and control by having a leash and collar or chest harness. Make him wear reflective collars as well as a tag with a microchip for a safe return in case of missing incident.

Leaves – A Catastrophe to Handle

It’s a pleasure to just move around and listen to that rumbling sound coming out of the dried leaves. Dogs love to run about the foliage and have fun time. But the furry animals are not aware of the danger of this debris. These dried leaves are the source of toxicity if your fur pal lick any substance from the ground or their paws.

There may be fleas, ticks as well as bacteria and mold growth on these leaves. And, if your pet ingests any of these micro-organisms, it would be creating dangerous condition including vomiting, diarrhea, sickness or even tapeworm infection.

It is better to remove the foliage and cut short the dried grass in the lawn to keep away those nasty parasites. Moreover, ensure that your pet remains indoors, separate from the yard work.

Plants and Mushrooms

Mushrooms and other toxic plants are seasonal plants of the Fall and they are wildly found during this time. Your furry pal may succumb to toxicity if any of the part – leaves, stem or flower, any of these is ingested by them. Mushrooms are wildly found in yards. Though most of the wild mushrooms are non-toxic, there are a few which are highly toxic, and when ingested cause challenging situations.

Therefore, try to remove any unwanted plants and mushrooms from your yard and avoid your pet from moving around in the yard until you remove it.

Fatality due to Rodenticides

Falling temperatures drive rodents out of their shell in search of shelter for cold into your homes. People mostly use rodenticides to kill these creatures and keep them away from their homes. However, at times your dog or cat are likely to feast on these chemicals, and may encounter grave danger. Rodenticides cause critical conditions like hemorrhages, uncontrolled bleeding, and blood in vomit.

If you suspect that your cat or a dog has ingested rodenticides and find any toxicities, immediately contact your vet or poison emergency center for immediate help.

Pets Are Constant Companion

Your child is bound to get bored and lonely. This happens most when you are raising a single child. However, having a pet around helps your child to have a constant companion in the house.

Pets also can match the energy and excitement level of a child. A human adult can never match the energy and enthusiasm a pet, in the form of a dog, has. The pet can keep your child busy and engaged. It can be your child’s constant playmate without getting bored.

Increase Your Child’s Activity Level

In the era of smart-phones and tabloids there are chances that your child might become less active. However, a recent study has shown that the kids, who own a dog, exercise eleven minutes more on average, than non-dog owning kids.

Eleven minutes might sound quite less but also when you add up the figure in terms of weeks and month you realize the benefits. A pet in the form of a dog really helps your child to walk the extra mile and keep him/her active.

Grows Responsibility

Children with pets become more responsible than the others. It keeps them alert whether the dog or the cat got their share of food or water. They also tend to share more than the other kids.

The kids learn to be accountable of someone else. In that way they grow up to be more responsible adults. They learn fast that how the pets are dependent on the human beings and from that understanding, the attachment develops.

Makes them Empathetic

Pets also teach your children to become empathetic and kind towards others. Kids without any kind of pets tend to become cruel or repulsive towards other animals. However, kids having pets like dogs or cats tend to care more for others.

The responsibilities of owning a pet makes them accountable and their self-esteem also increases. They grow-up to be dependable adults than kids who don’t own a pet. By keeping in mind their pet’s feeding and grooming routines, they also learn to keep track of their own routines.

Makes them Healthier

Studies have shown that there are also certain health benefits of having pets. Babies who are being raised near pets tend to fall less sick than the babies who are not. Pets, especially dogs, carry certain microbes from outside into your home. These microbes tend to help your baby by improving their immunity.
